CLUB NEWSLETTER January - February 2010
Manager’s Corner by Mark Mohr

Happy New Year, from all the Staff at the Club to all our customers. We appreciate your loyalty and continued support.

As we know nothing stays the same and change is ongoing. I have been contemplating the number of friends, family and our Club members that passed on last year. The list was long. We do not like saying good-bye to old friends and family. But change is always about. God Bless those we lost last year. God Bless the ones left behind. It has been suggested that we all need to think about and spend our time more wisely. Does any body know what the “Bucket List Movie” was about? Change is always about.

Guess what? Finally AUTO PAY for, our busy members and members that worry they will forget. NO MORE LATE FEE WORRY (only exception is if credit card is declined). We have worked hard on billing and customer service procedures the last 3 years to get to this point. Included in this mailing you will find the SIGN UP SHEET for AUTO PAY. If you have a checking account Debit Card, or any Credit Card we are able to automatically charge your Club account each month without you worrying about being on time. You will be immune to Late Fees in the future. We will handle that for you. All questions or problems can be solved with an e-mail or a phone call. See Club Contacts

You will receive a bill each month on the 1st, as always, with the amounts we are going to charge that same month between the 1st thru the 25th. The amount will not reflect payment for the current month. It will show the previous month payment because we have not run your card yet. You may request a payment print out faxed/mailed at any time to look at your payments. Any problems or disputes on the invoices can be credited and handled by my Staff by phone or e-mail.
Contact the following:
Dial “O” for live contact or

You may call between 12PM and 7PM, Mon thru Friday to speak to our Customer Service Team. All voice mails, extensions and e-mail addresses are listed in the Club Directory in the Club News or on the website at BOVSWIM.COM..
If you have a credit card change or decline charge contact Sandy@bovswim.com, ext 36 to leave messages. Sandy is the lead Manager of the Auto Billing. By hitting “O” when you call you will get a live person. Please call when the Customer Service staff is on duty between 12pm thru 7pm Mon-Fri. Sorry for the delays in starting this process, but we had to arrange other procedures first to be able to handle the load of work. We are always looking for ways to increase added value to you and your membership to repay you for your loyalty and support.

With all the changes about and the addition to our New Tennis Department Team we have updated and re-published all of our Club Rules, Tennis Etiquette, Tennis Court Dress Code and Scheduling your Court time in signs on court as well as flyers. Be aware of the Rules now being enforced that where more relaxed in the past. We can no longer let them slide. We have a more active adult and Jr. tennis programs than ever before, especially with three teaching Tennis Dept. staff teaching members every day . Our Teams are growing. We are starting a new Private Club Tennis league with the surrounding Clubs. Basically we are seeing more players and programs on court than ever before. That means you need to start calling in NOW to schedule the court you want or you will not get it. Any repeat weekly / monthly scheduling needs to be pre-approved by the Director of Tennis to put on the Tennis Court Schedule regularly. Mr. William (Bill)Conway, Tennis pro and Director, will be more than happy to speak to you and help you plan your court times. He is the man in charge of the courts.

Please teach our new and younger tennis players the correct behavior when playing at the Club. Courts will be watched for problems as much as we can to make sure your time on court is a pleasant rewarding experiance. Any problems speak to Bill or drop a note into the suggestion Box at the Tennis Office/Pro Shop Show Room (by the Coke/Pepsi Machines).

New procedures now in place for 2010 are: only the Club Ball Machine can be used on our courts starting January 1st 2010. All multiple ball practices are now scheduled for the upstairs courts #6 & #7 only. Please call in to schedule your court use in advance. Then we know when to turn on the lights. We have baskets of balls available if you like.

The Practice/Teaching Court now used for hitting large number of balls more than 4. The charge for the Club Ball Machine use is under $16 per month if you purchase a yearly ticket, it is $15 per hour other wise. Look into it. We have weekly and monthly charges for you convenience. You may share the machine with the members in your family. Younger player 16yrs and under must be authorized by the Tennis pro to use the machine without parent supervision. Once you have signed up, all you do is: give your name at the Front Counter Window and ask for the key to the gate and machine shed. Good balls are in the hopper and power cord is ready for your use. You need to schedule this Ball Machine court #7 well in advance or take the risk of showing up and having to wait. We have a very nice sophisticated ball machine that moves the ball around to work your needs. We will purchase a second machine in the spring for back up and daily use.

We have been given the privilege of being a Babalot Distributor of one of the top Tennis racquet’s and Tennis apparel in the world. They make one of the best series of superior tennis racquets in the world with competitive prices compared with other manufactures. They sponsor some of the top players in the world like Andy Roddick, Nadal, Dinara Safina, and Kim Clijsters. They have their own special Personalized racquets and we will soon have them in stock. We have the sales market exclusive for the Bay Area, not in the valley. The New Tennis Office is being set up as a Tennis Pro Shop / Show Room for Babalot. Our inventory will be sufficient to satisfy 95% of our customers. You can place an order for any non stock item at any time if not in stock. We will help on UPS charges on large orders. We will have Demo Racquet’s for you to test prior to purchase. Bill, the Tennis pro, and or his Professional staff will help you pick out the best equipment to fit your body, swing and game. They will then help you pick out the correct string and string settings, and string the racquet for you on site. One of their sales features is they do not discontinue models they just add to the line very slowly to offer stable sales and knowledgeable players of their product. Anyone can see a Babalot racquets when in use and know what it is by it’s distinct marking’s year in and year out. You could repurchase the same equipment years later if you wanted. Other Manufacturers make a new set of models and discontinue racquets trying to stimulate sales by killing inventories all year long causing dead inventories, confusion and poor quality equipment to be sold. Come see our show room.

Team BOV and I have been working on a big project this winter for our new Club TV advertising (internal) Network. No outside signals or channels will be available. This network will be informing you about all of our programs, products and events at the Club, by using members as our movie stars sometimes. Hopefully this will reduce the need for all the fliers and signs around. That is our goal. There will be 37” Flat TV Monitors in all the main areas of the Club that will run on computers and or on DVD’ players with loop commercials made with our own equipment, data and staff. We have new budding movie Director/Producers on staff. We are all having fun with this. Monitors will run different commercials every week or month. We will be using staff and members to be our movie stars. Watch, you might be in the movies. See the first test TV in the window at the front Counter facing the Big Pool next time in. We used this to test our market, the membership. We found that a visual commercial on a monitor gets every persons attention every time they walk by. Instead of ignoring the paper flyers and asking what’s going on for the summer. We noticed stopping and watching the whole program to see if they are on it was a big draw. Keep your eyes open when you see a camera coming around the corner, in the Wt Room, Pavilion, Pool Deck & Tennis Courts we need all the free subjects we can find to make our BOV Movie Commercials. We will use who ever is in front of us. Everything will be within the Club. The only outside use will be the TV we use to sell memberships to new prospective members outside the gate on the wall next to the front window.

We just received our supply of NEW STAINLESS STEEL WATER BOTTLES WITH OUR bov LOGO’S. My staff discovered in the Wall Street Journal last year that plastic water bottles give off plastic particles over a long time that cause cancers and bacterial growth that can make you sick. Especially breast cancer was warned but not proven. Did you know that the minimum fluid intake needs to more than 64oz’s per 24hrs if you where sick in bed, 4 quarts in regular civilian life if you sit alot, 6 quarts if you workout and move regularly and 8 quarts if your are in full armor uniform in Iraq in the summer in 120 degree heat. This information came from a Navy Seals-Special forces Master sergeant that trains recruits. Fresh Water Hydration is the key to good health, flush out toxins very hour of every day. Make the liver, kidneys and bladder clean you out. It also helps the other end as well, but you can think that through yourself.

Our new bottles are DISHWASHER SAFE, they come in two sizes 24 oz @ $9.99+ tax and 44oz @ 12.99 + tax with two different type tops. We have them displayed for your inspection and hydration. When you purchase you can have your phone#, initials or name etched on the metal bottom so you know it’s your bottle so we can call you if you leave it behind. You can write what you want personally if you like or ask for help no charge.

We are trying to plan NEW regular Spring/Summer Event at the Club called “Movie Night” after 9pm. We want to have a Movie night and project a movie outside on a screen on the Pool Decks. You can float in the pool or sit on the deck or at a table, lay on a lounge. What do you think? We want your ideas. We have come up with many ideas but need your input on what to show, how often etc. Let us know. By e-mail Julie@bovswim.com tell the Club Party/BBQ Supervisor our one and only Party Smart Girl what your ideas are. We could show oldies, old sporting events, fights, classics, new etc. You tell us. Lets have some fun at night after dark on deck.

Be aware it is TURN-UP TIME. The turn-ups show up for their News Year’s Resolutions. They show up work out get sore and then disappear in a less then 4-week time span. Do not be a turn up. Start slow, start with knowledge or help. Best of all if you stop, start over again, even if you have to re-start your work outs 4-5 times to get going keep going and keep restarting until it holds every week. You know what I’m talking about. That means for Diets-losing weight and exercise-workouts. Happy New Year.

Thank You for Your Patronage, loyalty and support over the years, we are 52 years old this month. Happy Birthday BOV.

Happy New Year to friends and families of Bay-O-Vista Swim and Tennis Club!

Once again, it is hard to believe that another year has flown by so fast. Fitness highlights of 2009 include purchasing medicine balls and soft foam rollers for our classes, more energy efficient lighting in the pavilion, ummer line-dancing workshops, and new instructors including Yulia Wynn, Tim Weekes and new subs Cynthia Chandler and Julia Jayne. Though it has been a tough year economically, people recognize the value of exercise and how it contributes to our health and well-being especially during stressful times. We hope that during 2010, your family can enjoy many activities here at Bay-O-Vista.

Last year the club mailed out questionnaires so that members could express their ideas and desires in all departments; after calculating the fitness wishes for new classes, we came up with a plan to offer more classes to the 9 – 5 working folks. Unfortunately, due to very low attendance some of these classes have been cancelled or altered. Please make note of the new changes for 2010.

Monday Beginner Total Body Conditioning @ 7:15pm CANCELLED
Tuesday Roll and Release @ 12pm CANCELLED
Sunday Cardio Circuit @ 10am CANCELLED

New classes offered are as follows:
Monday Back Care Class @ 10am
Tuesday Kidfit Cross-Training @ 4:30pm
Sunday Cycle Core Plus @ 9am (1.5 hours)

These changes are necessary in order to improve the fitness schedule for the club and its members, and this process will continue as we assess new trends and keep our program updated. Tuesday’s Cardio Circuit and Thursday’s Tai Chi will remain our two 7:15pm classes for those interested in later evening classes. Kathy Thompson is back to teach her Aqua Jam on Thursdays @ 5pm, welcome back Kathy! Jodie Jonas will teach Cycle Core Plus on Sunday mornings @ 9am. This class will allow cycle participants to work on strength and endurance “weekend-warrior style”. Last year we offered a month long extended Cycle Core class which proved to be very popular, so here is your opportunity to shed those holiday pounds. Megan also teaches Cycle Core this winter Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 6am for early birds. Cycling has the added benefit of strengthening the knee joint without adding impact to the joint.

Our new Back Care class offered Monday mornings at 10am is a therapeutic style class for those members who suffer chronic back issues, but who also realize the importance of “keeping moving”. There are many exercises designed to help correct muscle imbalances while strengthening and stretching muscles which are common culprits. Working within painfree range of motion, individual limitations, moving with ease and proper body mechanics are the goals of this ongoing class. Come and learn how to perform a proper pelvic tilt to help release deep tension in the lumbar spine and promote core strength with a healthier, happy back.

Kidfit for ten years and up has a new title “Kidfit Cross-Training”. Since young teens reach a critical stage of development both mentally and physically, we are reshaping our class to benefit those kids involved in school sports, competitive teams, and general preparation for the weight room. Demands are great on kids who are asked to practice three to five times per week and overuse injuries are becoming more frequent at this age. Many injuries could be prevented if kids had more knowledge about taking care of their bodies through better body mechanics and core strength. Learning how to stabilize hips and shoulders during push-ups and abdominal exercises, better breathing and how to stretch more efficiently are some components of this new class. Sign up for this free ten week session beginning January 12th, 2010.

Make your New Year’s Resolution stick this year by committing to an exercise class at least once or twice a week. Check out our fitness schedule table to see all classes including Cardio, Yoga, Pilates, Aqua, Weight Works, Stretch, Tai Chi and Cycle. Feel free to drop Dallis a line or leave a voicemail message at ext. #32 if you have any questions regarding our classes and how to get started. Our instructors are all certified, knowledgeable, and friendly so there is nothing stopping you.

As you’ve heard before, “move it or lose it!” See you in class.

10 (Almost Surefire) Ways to Gain Weight During the Holidays

1. Don’t practice moderation. The holiday season only comes once a year. If you want to eat something, throw caution to the wind. You deserve to treat yourself. It’s been a long year. Don’t worry about gaining weight. You can always address that issue (if it occurs) in the New Year.

2. Don’t forget to drink a lot of eggnog. As a rule, because this popular calorie-laden beverage only tends to beavailable during the holidays, you need to quench your thirst for eggnog when you can. Make sure you drink the highoctaneversion (i.e., approximately 350 calories per cup). Don’t be a weenie and dilute it with nonfat milk.

3. Don’t stop eating until you’re really full. Never forget that you make your own memories. Why shouldn’t you put an extra pat of butter on your gravy-laden potatoes? What’s more memorable than a great holiday meal, particularly one that makes you feel like you’re going to explode from stuffing yourself?

4. Don’t ever turn down an invitation to attend a holiday party. Parties are a terrific opportunity to show off your social side and celebrate the end of yet another year. The fact that almost all holiday parties tend to feature excessive amounts of high-calorie foodstuffs, as well as unlimited access to alcoholic librations, is a bonus. Bon appétit!

5. Don’t avoid stress. You can do it all. Whenever possible, wait until the last minute to shop, decorate, and so on. Cram your schedule as full as you can. Rest is not important. If you get hyper, food and drink are great coping agents.

6. Don’t plan your meal schedule on the day of the big holiday party. If possible, starve yourself until the party so that you’re really hungry when the time comes. Pacing yourself by eating several relatively small meals during the course of the day before you attend the party is not the best way to earn your “I-stuffed-myself-until-I-was -blue-in-the-face” merit badge.

7. Don’t reach for the vegetables on the snack tray. If a higher power didn’t want you to eat fried food, how could you explain the existence of buffalo wings? What could possibly taste better than pigs in a blanket? Don’t potato chips qualify as a vegetable? As long as you eat them a handful at a time, how could salted nuts possibly be bad for you? Who actually thinks that raw veggies are appropriate holiday fare?

8. Don’t be a teetotaler. Not only does alcohol taste great, it also can loosen you up. A few cocktails (particularly fancy ones) before and after a holiday meal can set the stage for a terrific time. In addition, don’t forget about drinking a glass or two of fine wine during the meal itself. Surely liquid calories don’t add up?

9. Don’t deny yourself the pleasures of eating desserts. It’s too hard to resist the delicious desserts that are set out at holiday time. Love pie - top it off with a dollop of whipped cream or ice cream. Prefer cake-don’t forget to get as much icing as you can. Crave holiday cookies - keep them handy so that you can eat them whenever the urge arises.

10. Don’t exercise. You hardly have enough time to do the whole array of festivities that typically occur during that holiday season. Why be physically active when you have more important things to do? The only purposeful movement that makes sense is reaching for more food or another drink. What are a few extra pounds? You can lose them whenever you want. How hard could that be?

I hope that everyone is having a healthy and happy holiday season. After the busy holiday season, if you need a kick start with your exercise program give Bob a call at 510.530.3748 or email at bob@trainerbob.com.

Nutrition Update:

by JODIE JONAS, M. S.

Our fourth Lost it at the Club had 25 participants who worked for 10 weeks this past Oct – Nov. Their goal was to lose weight and learn how to keep it off. I spoke with them regarding portion sizing, eating for nutrition instead of emotions, and most importantly how to make small, realistic changes to their diets for a period of time that allows them to make the change stick!

I found it was a very busy time of the year to do a Lost it program. To that I say, we can always find reasons and ways to avoid making changes, especially when it comes to food and exercise habits. This group of 25 was all very busy. Our winners for the men and the women each lost 20 pounds apiece. They did not take time away from their jobs or change their schedules so very much. They did add some exercise and changed a few things in their diets.

If you are interested in making a few changes and would like to have the support of team mates, a certified nutrition therapist and a chance to win monetary prizes for your efforts, please consider the next Lost it at the Club program. We will be starting a program in February. Watch for the flyers in your monthly mailings! You can email or call Julie or me for any questions or concerns.
