Trigger points or muscle knots are described as hyper irritable spots in skeletal muscle that are palpable nodules in taut bands of muscle fibers.
Unexplained pain frequently radiates from these points of local tenderness to broader areas, sometimes distant from the trigger point itself. Practitioners have identified referred pain patterns which associate pain in one location with trigger points elsewhere.
In my practice I may use a variety of techniques targeted at areas of referred pain resulting in an ease or even a disappearance of symptoms in a related pain pathway. For example, working on a trigger point between the shoulder blades can bring relief from the pain felt in the shoulder joint or even the cervical spine. Trigger-point hypersensitivity in the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius often produces intense pain in the low back region. Working the points related to that area can bring much needed relief.
Trigger point therapy is a noninvasive massage therapy that may help relieve your pain without the use of addictive pain medications and invasive surgery.
If you would like to try this form of myofascial release or are interested in discussing other techniques that may be beneficial please contact me.
